How To: Heatless Perm Rod Set Curls on Natural Hair

Hey Sistas! Here’s a heatless perm rod set natural hair tutorial for those who like “springy-like” curls. I’m still working on the overnight care routine as I haven’t quite been able to get past first day hair. I think it has a lot to do with the products drying out my hair, especially the setting lotion. I’m still going to experiment more with roller sets because I love the results, and even though I found that just putting a satin cap on over the style gave better results than my initial idea, I was still having trouble with the lack of moisture in my hair. OK, lets get started!

Products Needed:

  • Hair clips
  • Purple and White Perm Rods (I used a little over 50)
  • Detangling Brush
  • True Wave End Papers
  • 8-9oz spray bottle | 6-7oz water mixed with 1-2oz of setting lotion
  • Mousse
  • Clear Styling Gel
  • Satin Bonnet

The Process:

Step 1: Start with freshly washed hair that been moisturized with leave-in conditioner, parted and sectioned
Step 2: Take a small section of hair and spray it with the water and setting lotion mixture
Step 3: Thoroughly finger detangle the section and apply a generous amount of mousse to your hand, then saturate the section of hair
Step 4: Use the detangling brush, or your fingers if you prefer, to detangle the section and smooth in the mousse
Step 5: Add the styling gel to the section of hair
Step 6: Wrap the end paper around the center of the perm rod
Step 7: Starting from the ends of your hair, apply the perm rod and roll upwards until you reach the roots, and secure the rod
Step 8: Repeat steps 3-7 until you complete your entire head. I used the white rods in the front since my hair it a bit longer. I also used them for the shorter and smaller sections of hair
Step 9: Apply a satin bonnet and let you hair air dry overnight
Step 10: Make sure your hair is completely dry, then carefully remove the rods to avoid frizz
Step 11: Shake your head to loosen up the curls
Step 12: Split the curls where they naturally separate
Step 13: Use your hair pick to get rid of the visible parts and to give your hair more of a fuller look
Step 14: Optional: Move some of your hair from the sides of your head to the front to create a big bang

  1. I loved this Toni, your hair looked beautiful, I have only used perm rods for twisting my braids but never like you did. I have considered it. I think I will give it a try.
