How To: Trim Your Natural Hair for Growth

Hey Sistas! This is an easy tutorial on how to trim your own natural hair to retain length and promote growth without straightening or using any type of heating tool. It’s important to care for your ends to retain length, prevent breakage and keep the split ends away, so trim your hair every 3-4 months, or as you see fit. This is a great alternative to going to a professional hair stylist for a trim, but if you need a shape up, I recommend seeing a professional. I’ve been using this trim and twist method since I’ve been natural and I’ve always experienced tremendous hair growth.

Products Needed:

  • Hair scissors
  • Hair Clips
  • Comb
  • Coconut Oil or Shea Butter

The Process:

Step 1: Start with freshly washed, detangled hair. (Optional: Deep condition your hair before you trim your ends)
Step 2: While your hair is still slightly wet, part your hair in the same way you would for two strand twists and use hair clips to hold the sections in place
Step 3: Take a small section of hair, glide it between your middle and ring finger, stop right before you get to the end of your hair
Step 4: Comb your ends and you will be able to clearly see the breakage and where the hair thins out
Step 5: Take your scissors and evenly cut straight across to remove the split ends or where you see thinning hair
Step 6: Repeat this process around the front of your head, but when you get to the back or a section you can’t easily see, twist the hair first, the trim the ends for an even finish

That’s it! Let me know if you end up trying this technique in the comments or in The Sistahood Forum! And subscribe to our YouTube channel to view more videos and stay updated on new uploads!
