I’m sure by now we’ve all seen Beyonce’s music video for her new single, “Formation.” There has been a lot of controversy surrounding Beyonce, from her visualization of the South and blatant proclamation that Black Lives Matter in her music video to her acknowledgment of the 50th Anniversary of the Black Panther Party during her Super Bowl performance. People have been more than outspoken about their opinions of her artistic decisions, but whether you liked her choices or not, the one thing we can all agree on is that Beyonce has started an important conversation around race and boldly displayed black aesthetics rarely ever shown in pop culture. She is unapologetically Black and wanted to remind everyone where she’s from. As fellow Houstonians and also supporters of all things #BlackExcellence related, we salute Beyonce for putting herself and various aspects of the Black experience all the way out there (I, too, carry hot sauce in my purse) and for putting women of color, especially natural hair, in mainstream media. She is rocking some beautiful protective hairstyles in her music video and her dancers all sported natural textured wigs during her Super Bowl performance in front of MILLIONS of viewers. We loved seeing the representation of natural hair on such a large platform and commend Beyonce for that amazing display of #BlackGirlMagic. She flawlessly displayed the versatility of Black hair and her baby Blue Ivy looked beautiful in her curly ‘fro. In a time where more and more women are choosing to embrace their natural hair, it is extremely important to see images in the media that reflect this shift and also acknowledge the fact that our hair is, in fact, beautiful. So here’s to all women of color, natural or not, continue to SLAY and stay unabashedly true to yourself. And in case you missed it, here’s a recap of the beautiful hairstyles on display in the Formation music video.
